Learning Mentor
Time with the Learning Mentors
We are Linzi Kitchin and Kirsten Horner and we are the Learning Mentors at Weeth CP School. We work in Weeth’s Inclusion Room known as the Phoenix. Most pastoral care takes place in here. We work closely with Mrs Fazakerley-Owen (D&SENCo) who can be found next door in the Oasis.
We shall explain briefly what the Learning Mentor role encompasses: We try to remove barriers to learning that a child may have be they social, behavioural or emotional. We do this in many ways but largely through play, off site visits, sport, physical education and support in the class room. We are a listening ear to any child or parent that has a problem. Children and parents can pop in to see us at any time. If we can’t solve the problem ourselves, we can often refer on to someone else that can help as we liaise closely with other agencies.
Staff working in the Phoenix are flexible and work on a needs led basis. Children and parents are welcome to pop in at any time to talk to us. We feel that there is nothing so awful or so small that it cannot be talked about to someone and a solution found or worked towards.
We aim to make school a happy environment where a child is safe, can thrive and build on their individual talents. We take a holistic approach to the whole child.

Support Programmes
During the day Miss Kitchin and Ms Horner have the opportunity to work with individual pupils called ‘mentees’ and also work with small groups of pupils.
They run programmes that help children express themselves in positive ways as well as a range of other specialised programmes.
They are a friend to everyone!
